St. Vincent’s HealthCare proudly introduces the Atrial Fibrillation Institute, bringing hope to all who suffer from this dangerous disorder. The Institute provides a team of expert cardiothoracic surgeons and electrophysiologists who work together to determine each patient’s best course of treatment.

For ideal candidates for these procedures, our physicians report cure rates of 85 to 90 percent. Atrial fibrillation, often referred to as "AF" or "A-Fib", is the most common type of heart rhythm disorder or arrhythmia. It forces the heart to quiver rapidly rather than beating in a normal, rhythmic pattern. The disorder leads to a greater risk of stroke, heart failure and death. It is estimated that as many as three million Americans experience Atrial Fibrillation. More than 180,000 people are diagnosed with AFIB each year. The symptoms of AF include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, chest discomfort and dizziness.
